Today, the Mykolaiv City Rada unanimously adopted a strategic plan for economic development of the city.
Mayor Volodymyr Chayka took floor before the voting and thanked the USAID for assistance in plan elaboration. The Rada also decided to use the Mykolaiv Economic Development Strategic Plan as a concept for a future socioeconomic development plan.
According to the strategy, the “City of Shipwrights” will focus on three critical issues:
- Small and medium enterprise and business infrastructure development;
- Communal infrastructure development; and
- Investment attraction.
An Expert Committee formed in the city in July 2006 worked out the Mykolaiv Economic Development Strategic Plan with assistance from the USAID LED project. Members of the committee included community leaders, such as managers of enterprises, members of the City Rada, officers of executive bodies, representatives of scientific and educational institutions, and NGO leaders.
The committee launched into operation on July 12, 2006. Te first meeting was also attended by Earl W. Gast, Mission Director for the USAID Mission to Ukraine, Moldova, and Belarus, William Schlansker, the then USAID Municipal Development Advisor, and LED Project Chief of Party Howard Ockman.
The draft plan was ready in October 2006.
